Period drama following a group of nursing midwives working in the East End of London in the late 1950s. The series touches a chord with its exploration of contemporary and problematic social issues, from teen pregnancy and adoption, to birth defects and disease. The storyline revolves around the day to day experiences of a newly qualified midwife, Jenny Lee, as she arrives at Nonnatus House in the borough of Poplar, which is one of the capital's poorest districts. She and her team of medically-trained nuns and nurses have to struggle to help mothers through labour and to ensure the safety of the newborns. Director: Ruth Carney.
