By the age of 27, Mohini Pandey from India was divorced, abandoned by her family and truly and completely alone in the world. She felt numb for years. Only after breaking down in front of her class did, she starts opening up to her school kids. They brought her a sense of community, familiarity and belonging — and it was the beginning of her healing journey. When Alice Yu became a mother at 26, she faced the overwhelming pressures of motherhood. This challenging period, however, set the stage for a remarkable transformation through art that not only revitalized her own life but also inspired the creation of Mama on Palette, an organization dedicated to helping mothers in Singapore manage mental health through artistic expression. Life alone as a single woman is meaningful for Sau Thia as she makes her community in Vietnam her chosen family. Sau Thia volunteers as a swimming instructor for children in the Hung Thanh commune and teaches survival techniques to prevent drowning in the Mekong Delta, where she comes from. Today, at 65, Sau Thia still lives alone, but she doesn’t feel alone.
