Catherine Cawood is a headstrong police sergeant living her recovering alcoholic and addict sister, Clare, in the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire. Despite her tough exterior, Catherine is not without her struggles and her private life is somewhat complicated as she still lives with the pain from the loss of her daughter, Becky, who took her own life after being sexually assaulted. However, when a series of staged kidnappings occur in the town of Happy Valley, Catherine's life is about to get a lot more complicated, and the investigation leads her a little too close to home.
