As the first light of spring touches snow-covered landscapes, the race begins. Across fjords, forests, mountains and tundra, animals emerge from hiding to take advantage of summer's fleeting generosity. But the clock is ticking, and winter is never far away. Brown bear mothers supervise their wayward cubs; puffins reunite in lifelong pairs atop perilous ledges; a polar bear mother searches for food in a land where the ice has receded and her usual prey has vanished. As summer fades, the mighty moose faces wolves in the silent snow. Arctic foxes raise their young and scavenge in brutal temperatures, surviving on scraps others cannot digest.
